Alexander Hans Schmitt was an avid reader of speculative fiction in all its variety throughout his life. After earning degrees in philosophy and law he decided that he was better suited for the life of a writer rather than that of an environmental lawyer. Alex worked steadily on Imperiled until the onset of epilepsy and the side effects of antiseizure medication stalled his writing and his efforts to publish. He died suddenly following a seizure. He was 42 years old. Alex’s mother, Vonnie Gene Schmitt, edited Imperiled and arranged for its publication.
In debut novelist Alexander Hans Schmitt's epic space opera, readers embark on a gripping journey with Junior Commander Anaiya Sonra. In the far future, an unexpected betrayal throws Commander Sonra's life into chaos and ends her career as the emergency coordinator of a habitat-based space patrol force. Falsely accused of smuggling, Anaiya faces certain conviction, and a soul-destroying future, unless she takes matters into her own hands. She commandeers a starship, battles her way to the nearest rift transit fold zone, and sets out on a perilous quest for the truth.
As Anaiya's voyage progresses, she melds a dependable and resourceful crew from an unlikely bunch of castaways. Together they investigate the source of Anaiya's undoing: the unprovoked attack and destruction of an ancient freight hauler, and they uncover the mystery of the cargo that the hauler carried on that final voyage. But as they delve deeper, they discover that answers come with a devastating cost, and none of them realize the reach of the situation in which they have become enmeshed. Packed with action, Imperiled is a must-read for science fiction fans seeking an unforgettable tale of resilience and discovery.
I enjoyed reading IMPERILED: A SCIENCE FICTION ADVENTURE by Alexander Hans Schmitt, with Vonnie Gene Schmitt, and in my view, it is a fast-paced, action-packed debut that delivers everything : mystery, betrayal, and a strong, determined heroine that I cheered on, in the story.
The protagonist, Junior Commander Anaiya Sonra, is thrust into chaos after being falsely accused of smuggling. With her career in ruins and conviction looming, she takes matters into her own hands, commandeers a starship, and sets out on a daring quest to uncover the truth. Along the way, she forms an unlikely but loyal crew, and I like the way what begins as a fight for redemption soon becomes a deeper mission with galaxy-wide consequences.
I felt this story is well-paced with cinematic action, a richly built futuristic setting, and thoughtful character development. Anaiya is a standout lead. She's fierce, intelligent, and resourceful. The supporting characters add warmth, humor, and diversity to the journey, and to the central mystery, and that kept me reading.
I also felt the execution was strong and satisfying. The story has great space adventure, complex characters, and resilient heroes all making this book an enjoyable read.
In my opinion, this book is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys space operas with substance! Very well done!
