From an early age Alex loved books. As a child he enjoyed Kenneth Graham's classic, The Wind and the Willows. During his kindergarten year his mother read all seven of C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia to him. After learning to read, by the end of the third grade he was reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle and The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas. As a teenager, he read voraciously but liked Science Fiction and Fantasy books best of all. His favorite series of all time was J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. He had finished rereading these book shortly before he died suddenly following a seizure.
Alex's top five science fiction movies were: Forbidden Planet (1956), Blade Runner (1982), The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), and Predator 2 (1990).
Writing science fiction is about sliding toward the edge. First, an author must determine where the edge is. Then, they must avoid falling over it as they become increasingly aware that the edge is not as obvious as it should be. Finally, the author realizes that the opposing forces in their story share more of the same beliefs and approaches to resolving problems than the author had previously acknowledged.
Alex was born in Houston, Texas in 1981. His father was a computer programmer, and his mother was a homemaker. In 1984 the family moved to Springfield, Virginia so his father could pursue a career as a software developer and his mother would have both the space to garden and an accommodating climate. The cultural opportunities that would be available to the family in the nation's capital were also a draw to the area.
Alex loved collecting paper currency from many countries and assembled a large collection over thirty years. He also collected stamps. He played classical piano. His favorite composers were Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Mozart, and Grieg. He enjoyed playing board games with his family, especially the Ticket to Ride series. Alex enjoyed visits to the Smithsonian museums throughout his life.
